Granular activated carbon systems fail for a predictable reason: the water passes through too fast. The governing parameter is empty bed contact time, and getting it right at design stage is far cheaper than discovering it in commissioning.

What EBCT means

Empty bed contact time is the volume of the carbon bed divided by the volumetric flow rate. Bed volume in cubic metres equals flow rate in cubic metres per hour multiplied by EBCT in hours. It expresses how long water is in contact with the carbon, ignoring the space occupied by the grains themselves.

Adsorption is not instant. Contaminant molecules must diffuse into the pore structure. Too little contact time and water exits carrying its contaminants regardless of how much carbon sits in the vessel.

Typical values by duty

Free chlorine removal: around 2 minutes EBCT is commonly cited as sufficient, since the reaction is catalytic and rapid rather than purely adsorptive.

Chloramine removal: substantially harder, typically requiring two to four times the contact time of free chlorine. Demanding applications such as dialysis water preparation specify around 10 minutes.

Organics and taste and odour: generally in the 5 to 30 minute range depending on the compounds targeted and the effluent quality required.

Factors that change the answer

pH matters more than most designers expect: moving from neutral pH 7 to pH 9 or 10 can require 30 to 60 percent more carbon for equivalent dechlorination. Temperature, competing organic load and the carbon iodine number all shift performance. Higher iodine number indicates greater surface area and generally better adsorptive capacity, which is why the certificate value matters when comparing offers.

Replacement planning

Beds exhaust gradually rather than suddenly. Many operators replace GAC on a fixed six to twelve month cycle, but monitoring breakthrough at the outlet is more economical: it prevents both premature changeouts and periods of untreated pass through. Fouling rate, not calendar time, determines the true interval.

MENA Industrial Supplies supplies granular and powdered activated carbon in coconut shell, coal and wood based grades from Dubai stock, with iodine number stated on every certificate.
