Antifouling is the rare paint where application mistakes stay invisible until months later, when the hull greens over early and the season is already paid for. These are the seven errors we see most from Dubai yards and owners.
1. Painting over a failing base
New antifouling over flaking old coats fails with them. Heavy build up needs stripping back before the first new litre goes on.
2. Skipping the tie coat on unknown coatings
If the existing antifouling type is unknown, a sealer or tie coat is cheap insurance against a chemistry clash that lifts the whole job.
3. Under applying
Biocide life is proportional to film thickness. One thin coat where the scheme says two full coats halves the season. Waterline, leading edges, rudder and keel foot want a third stripe coat because polishing is fastest there.
4. Ignoring minimum overcoat and immersion times
Launching before the minimum drying time washes soft paint off; waiting far beyond the maximum immersion window on some grades skins the surface and slows polishing. The data sheet gives both numbers; UAE heat shortens them.
5. Rolling it out too thin in the heat
Solvent flashes fast at 40 C, and the roller drags the film thin. Use the correct thinner sparingly and track wet film thickness with a gauge.
6. Missing the anodes and transducers
Anodes must stay bare, transducers take their own compatible coating. Masking discipline saves both.
7. No record of what went on
Next season starts with the same guessing game. Write down brand, grade, colour and coats; the next application becomes routine.
