Fouling pressure in the Arabian Gulf is among the highest a boat owner will meet anywhere: warm water all year, high salinity and busy nutrient rich harbours. The antifouling paint you choose decides how clean the hull stays between hauls and how much fuel the vessel burns.
Self polishing antifouling
Self polishing copolymer paints wear away at a controlled rate, constantly exposing fresh biocide. They suit vessels that move regularly: cruising yachts, workboats, tugs and commercial tonnage. Because the film reduces over time, build up between repaints stays manageable. This is the default recommendation for most vessels berthed in Dubai and the UAE.
Hard antifouling
Hard films hold their thickness and rely on biocide leaching from the surface. They tolerate scrubbing and fast running, which suits performance craft and vessels that are cleaned in the water. The downside is coat on coat build up that eventually cracks and must be stripped.
Foul release coatings
Silicone foul release systems contain no biocide at all; fouling struggles to grip the slick surface and releases when the vessel moves at speed. They perform best on vessels with high activity and speed, and they cost more up front.
What the rules say
Everything sold legitimately today complies with the IMO Anti Fouling Systems Convention, which banned tributyltin worldwide. Copper based biocides remain the industry standard and are permitted in the UAE.
