Carbon black N330 is the general purpose workhorse of the rubber industry, and one of the most requested industrial chemicals we supply from Dubai. Grades look interchangeable on paper until a compound fails, so here is what the numbers actually mean, using the ASTM D1765 classification that all reputable suppliers quote.
What N330 is
N330 is a high abrasion furnace black, HAF for short, with a typical particle size of 28 to 36 nanometres. Its typical certificate values run around 82 g/kg iodine adsorption and roughly 102 cm3/100g DBP absorption, with ash under 0.45 percent. The N prefix means normal curing behaviour; the first digit describes particle size class, so N2 grades are finer than N3 grades, which are finer than N5 grades.
Reading the two numbers that matter
Iodine adsorption tracks surface area: higher numbers mean finer particles, stronger reinforcement, harder dispersion and more heat build up. DBP absorption tracks structure, the branching of the aggregates, which drives stiffness and extrusion behaviour. N330 sits in the balanced middle on both, which is exactly why it is the default choice.
N220 vs N330 vs N550 in one paragraph
N220 has higher surface area, giving maximum abrasion resistance for tyre treads at the cost of dispersion effort and heat. N550, a fast extruding furnace grade, is coarser, easier to process, and suits hoses, profiles and inner liners where extrusion smoothness beats ultimate abrasion resistance. N330 covers the broad middle: treads and sidewalls, conveyor belts, technical rubber goods, and pigmentation duty in plastics masterbatch and inks.
What to verify on a Dubai delivery
Ask for the certificate of analysis per lot and check four things: iodine and DBP within the D1765 window, ash and sieve residue at or under specification, moisture on delivery, and consistent bulk density if your dosing is volumetric. Bag condition matters in Gulf humidity, so intact 25 kg bags on shrink wrapped pallets, or sealed big bags, are worth insisting on. Price wise, global N330 has been trading in a band around 1,000 to 1,350 US dollars per ton in Asia through 2025 and 2026, so a landed Dubai quote far below that range deserves scrutiny, not celebration.
