Most industrial stores accumulate chemicals gradually, and segregation gets decided by whatever shelf had space. That works until an incident, an audit or a spill demonstrates otherwise. Getting the layout right is inexpensive at the planning stage.
The incompatibility groups
Oxidisers. Products such as hydrogen peroxide supply oxygen to a fire and react violently with organics, reducing agents and many metals. They belong in a dedicated area, physically separated, ideally in their own bunded and ventilated store.
Flammables. Solvents and thinners need a fire rated store with ventilation, bonding and earthing for decanting, and no ignition sources. Never adjacent to oxidisers.
Acids and bases. Separated from each other to avoid violent neutralisation reactions in a spill, and both away from metals and cyanides.
Water reactive materials. Kept dry and away from the water used for spill response elsewhere.
Practical layout principles
Separation by distance is more reliable than separation by shelf, because spills travel. Where distance is limited, physical barriers and separate bunding are the substitute. Bund capacity should hold the largest single container plus a margin. Never store liquids above eye level, and never store anything hazardous above a walkway.
Compatible spill kits belong beside each group, since the correct response differs: peroxide spills are diluted with large volumes of water, whereas solvent spills must never be flushed to drain.
Gulf specific factors
Temperature control matters more here than in temperate climates. Decomposition, pressure build up in sealed containers and loss of assay all accelerate in a hot store. Shade, ventilation and, for sensitive products, air conditioning protect both safety and product value. Ventilation should be sized for the products present, with high level extraction where gases accumulate.
Documentation and drills
Keep safety data sheets accessible at the store, not only in an office file, and maintain an inventory so that emergency services know what is present.
