The primer decision on new steel comes down to two protection philosophies. Epoxy primers are barriers: they isolate steel from the electrolyte. Zinc rich primers add sacrifice: metallic zinc in contact with the steel corrodes preferentially, protecting scratches and holidays galvanically, the same principle as galvanising, delivered by brush and spray.

Where plain epoxy is the right call

Interiors, C2 and C3 environments, surfaces headed for immersion service where zinc is generally not wanted, and maintenance work over power tool prepared steel, where surface tolerant epoxies grip preparation that zinc rich primers cannot accept. Most inland UAE structural work sits here honestly, and money moved from an unnecessary zinc coat into film build usually buys more life.

Where zinc earns its premium

C4 and above, the coastal and industrial corridors from our ISO 12944 category guide, plus any application where mechanical damage is a certainty: handling, transport, bolted assembly. When the scratch happens, zinc keeps rust from undercutting the film; barrier only systems let damage creep. Classic UAE zinc territory: shoreline structure, bridges, plant steel headed to C5 sites, and fabrication yards shipping steel that will be assembled with hammers.

The rules zinc brings with it

Zinc rich primers demand blast cleaned steel, near white for inorganic zinc silicates, which also bring their own topcoating disciplines. Zinc dust content and the organic versus inorganic choice come from the specification and exposure. And in every case the primer is one layer of a system; our ISO 12944 article carries the standard builds it belongs inside.

MENA Industrial Supplies stocks both primer families in Dubai with same day quotation, and matches the choice to the site rather than the habit.
