Every consignment of rubber grade carbon black should arrive with a certificate of analysis. Most buyers file it unread. The COA is actually the only document that proves the bagged product matches the grade you paid for, and reading it takes two minutes once you know what each parameter controls.

The parameters that define the grade

Iodine adsorption number. A proxy for surface area, in milligrams of iodine per gram. For N330, ASTM D1765 targets around 82. Higher surface area generally means more reinforcement and a harder wearing compound, but also harder dispersion.

DBP absorption. Measured in cubic centimetres per 100 grams, this describes structure: how branched the aggregates are. N330 sits near 102. Higher structure improves modulus and conductivity but stiffens uncured compound.

Sieve residue. The grit content retained on a 325 mesh or 35 mesh screen. This is the parameter that shows contamination: hard particles that become visible defects in thin products and stress raisers in dynamic rubber goods. You want values in the low parts per million.

Heating loss and ash. Moisture picked up in transit and the mineral residue left on burning. Both should be fractions of a percent. Moisture matters in Gulf storage: bags kept in humid unconditioned warehouses drift upward, which upsets accurate batch weighing.

Reading a COA against ASTM D1765

ASTM D1765 defines target properties for each N grade. A compliant COA states the lot number, the measured values and the specification window. Reject paperwork that lists only typical values without lot specific measurements: that is a data sheet, not a certificate. Practical acceptance routine

Match the lot number on the COA to the bags. Check iodine and DBP sit inside the grade window. Scan sieve residue for any excursion. Record the values against your compound performance so that when a batch behaves differently in the factory, you can correlate it with the certificate rather than guessing.
