Hydrogen peroxide is one of the most useful oxidisers in industrial water treatment and bleaching, and one of the least forgiving to store badly. In UAE heat the margins tighten. This guide summarises the storage rules that keep a 35 to 60 percent peroxide stock safe.

Know the classification

Aqueous solutions between 20 and 60 percent ship as UN 2014, Class 5.1 oxidiser, packing group II at the stronger end of the range. The classification tells you the core hazard: peroxide does not burn, it makes everything around it burn harder, and it decomposes into oxygen and heat.

Decomposition is the central risk

Decomposition is self accelerating: heat speeds it up, and it produces heat. Contamination with metals such as iron or copper, with organics, or with strong acids and alkalis catalyses it violently. Two design rules follow. First, vented closures always: sealed containers of peroxide become pressure vessels. UN approved carboys and IBCs for peroxide have vented caps for exactly this reason. Second, absolute cleanliness: never return decanted product to the container, never use unwashed transfer equipment.

Segregation and materials

Store peroxide in a dedicated oxidiser area, physically separated from solvents, oils, thinners, reducing agents and metal powders. Compatible materials are high purity aluminium, passivated stainless steel and suitable polyethylene; ordinary mild steel and copper alloys are catalytic and must never contact the product. Bunding sized to the largest container is standard, with water available to dilute spills: unlike most chemicals, flooding with water is the correct response to a peroxide spill.

Temperature control in the Gulf

Every 10 degree rise roughly doubles the decomposition rate. A shaded, ventilated store that stays below 35 degrees preserves both safety margin and assay; product parked in the sun loses concentration and stresses its packaging. Indoor stores need ventilation at high level because released oxygen accumulates.

Handling routine

Nitrile or neoprene gloves, chemical splash goggles and an apron for decanting; an eyewash within reach. Rotate stock first in, first out and check assay on long stored material before critical use. For dosing guidance see our article on peroxide in effluent treatment.
