Most industrial paint specifications in Dubai reference ISO 12944, the international standard for corrosion protection of steel by paint systems. Understanding its two axes, corrosivity and durability, is the fastest way to pick the right system and avoid paying for protection you do not need, or worse, underprotecting coastal steel.

Corrosivity categories in UAE conditions

ISO 12944 grades environments from C1 to C5 plus CX. In practical UAE terms: inland air conditioned interiors sit near C2, urban Dubai exteriors are typically C3 with steel loss around 25 to 50 microns per year, industrial zones and near coastal sites are C4 at roughly 50 to 80 microns per year, and splash zone or heavy industrial coastal assets reach C5. Much of Dubai's coastline pushes structures into C4 and C5 territory because of heat, humidity and airborne salt.

Durability tiers set the maintenance interval

The second axis is durability: low, medium, high and very high, which correspond to expected years to first major maintenance. A C4 High system is a different, heavier build than a C4 Medium system. Specifying durability honestly matters in the UAE because access costs for repainting, especially on tanks and high structures, usually dwarf the original paint cost.

What the systems actually look like

A typical C3 Medium system is two coats around 160 to 200 microns total dry film: an epoxy primer plus a polyurethane topcoat. A C4 High system typically runs three coats at 220 to 320 microns, opening with a zinc rich primer on blast cleaned steel, an epoxy intermediate for build, then the polyurethane finish. C5 systems continue that logic with higher builds, often 280 microns and up, always over Sa 2.5 blast cleaning.

Why epoxy and polyurethane split the work

Epoxies adhere strongly, build quickly and resist chemicals and abrasion, but they chalk under UV. Polyurethanes hold gloss and colour under the Gulf sun but are not the best primers. So the standard architecture is epoxy underneath for protection and polyurethane on top for weathering. Swapping that order, or skipping the topcoat outdoors, is the most common cause of early cosmetic failure we see on Dubai sites.

Surface preparation decides the outcome

ISO 12944 assumes correct preparation. For C4 and above that means abrasive blast cleaning to Sa 2.5 with a suitable angular profile, which is exactly what 30/60 mesh garnet delivers at around 70 to 80 microns profile. A premium system over a poorly prepared surface performs like a cheap one.
