Landscaping in the UAE starts with a growing medium that barely functions as one. Local sand has very low organic content, minimal cation exchange capacity and drains so freely that both water and dissolved nutrient pass straight through the root zone. Planting into it without amendment guarantees high irrigation costs and disappointing establishment.
What the problems actually are
Water holding capacity. Sand releases water almost immediately, so irrigation must be frequent and much of it is wasted below the roots.
Nutrient retention. With little clay or organic matter, there is nothing to hold cations, so applied fertiliser leaches quickly.
Salinity. Irrigation water in the region carries dissolved salts that concentrate in the root zone as water evaporates, progressively stressing plants.
Biology. Untouched sand has minimal microbial life, so organic matter cycles slowly and root systems get little biological support.
What conditioners do
Organic soil conditioners add stable organic matter that holds water and nutrients within the root zone, improving both retention and structure. Bio fertilizers introduce beneficial microorganisms that support nutrient availability and root development. Together they reduce irrigation frequency and improve establishment rates, which is where the project economics improve: water is a recurring cost for the life of the landscape.
Specifying sensibly
Incorporate conditioner through the planting depth rather than laying it on the surface, since surface applications do little for root zone conditions. Match rates to planting type: turf, shrub beds and tree pits have different depths and requirements. Test the existing soil and the irrigation water before designing the amendment, because a salinity problem needs a different response from a fertility problem, and leaching requirements should be designed in rather than discovered.
Maintenance reality
Organic matter degrades faster in hot conditions, so amendment is not a one time event. Planned periodic top ups maintain the improvement. Where mulch is used at the surface it reduces evaporation and moderates root zone temperature, complementing the conditioner rather than replacing it.
