Dubai records well over 3,400 hours of sunshine a year, and boats live in all of them. Ultraviolet breaks down paint binders, and the visible result is chalking: the gloss goes flat, the colour fades, and a hand wiped on the hull comes away powdery. The binder decides how fast this happens.

Alkyd versus polyurethane

Single pack alkyd enamels are cheap and easy to brush, and in Gulf exposure they chalk within one to two seasons. Two pack acrylic polyurethanes crosslink into a far more UV stable film that holds deep gloss for years in the same berth. On a vessel that is repainted by the yard day rate, the more expensive litre is decisively the cheaper system.

The stack under the shine

Polyurethane is a finish, not a protector. The scheme is epoxy primer for adhesion and corrosion protection, epoxy undercoat for build and fairing, then two coats of polyurethane topside finish. Applying polyurethane straight over old alkyd is the classic failure; the solvents wrinkle the soft paint beneath.

Application in UAE conditions

Two pack polyurethanes want falling temperatures and low dust: early morning starts, shaded work, and the correct slow thinner in summer. Sprayed application gives the mirror finish; roll and tip with a quality brush gets surprisingly close for workboats and budgets that do not stretch to a spray tent.

Decks are their own subject

Gloss underfoot is dangerous. Deck areas take the same chemistry with non slip aggregate, covered in our range as deck grades.
