Hospitals, clinics, kitchens and food processing plants in Dubai increasingly specify antibacterial wall coatings. The claims deserve scrutiny, because the test behind them measures something specific and limited, and understanding it prevents both wasted money and false confidence.

What ISO 22196 measures

ISO 22196 assesses antibacterial activity on plastics and other non porous surfaces. Test organisms, typically Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, are inoculated onto treated and untreated samples, covered with a film to hold contact, incubated under controlled temperature and humidity for 24 hours, then recovered and counted. The result is expressed as antibacterial activity, a log reduction against the untreated control.

A log reduction of 2 means 99 percent fewer viable bacteria recovered after 24 hours. A log reduction of 3 means 99.9 percent. Suppliers quoting a specific value should cite the organism and the test period alongside it.

The limits worth stating plainly

The test uses ideal laboratory conditions: controlled humidity, uninterrupted contact, 24 hours. Real walls are dry, touched intermittently and cleaned. Performance in service is therefore lower than the laboratory figure. The standard covers bacteria, not viruses or fungal growth, which are separate tests and separate claims. Efficacy also depends on the active remaining available at the surface as the coating ages and is cleaned.

Most importantly, an antibacterial coating supplements cleaning, it never replaces it. It reduces bacterial survival on the painted surface between cleaning cycles. Any supplier suggesting otherwise is overselling.

Where these coatings earn their place

Hospital wards, corridors and treatment rooms. Commercial kitchens and food processing areas where walls are cleaned frequently and hygiene audits are documented. Schools and gyms. Pharmaceutical and clean room environments, where the washable, scrub resistant finish matters as much as the antibacterial function.
