Polymer dust suppression is usually sold on environmental compliance. It is bought, in practice, when the arithmetic on truck hours makes sense. Here is how to run that calculation before committing.
Application rate basics
A polymer suppressant is supplied as a concentrate and diluted with water in the truck. Two variables set consumption: the dilution ratio and the application rate in litres of diluted solution per square metre. Typical programmes distinguish an initial application, which is heavier because it must penetrate and bind loose surface material, from lighter maintenance applications that refresh the crust.
Surface condition drives both. Deep loose fines absorb more product than a compacted graded surface. Traffic intensity then determines the refresh interval: a haul road with continuous heavy vehicles needs shorter cycles than a lay down yard.
Building the comparison
Cost the existing water regime honestly. Count truck hours per day, driver cost, fuel, water cost, and the maintenance cost of the truck fleet. Multiply across the project duration. Most sites are surprised by the total, because water truck operation is treated as background noise rather than a line item.
Then cost the polymer programme: initial application volume plus scheduled refresh volumes over the same period, at the delivered price of concentrate, plus the far smaller number of truck passes required. Typical programmes report watering frequency reductions in the region of 80 to 90 percent on treated areas.
The benefits that do not appear in the spreadsheet
Reduced dust improves visibility and therefore safety on haul roads. Compliance complaints from neighbours and consultants drop. Surface material stops migrating off site, which preserves the road itself. Equipment air filters last longer. None of these are easy to quantify in advance, but they are consistently reported.
Specifying it properly
Give the supplier area, surface type, traffic classification and required duration, and ask for a written application rate and dilution for those conditions rather than a generic figure.
