Dust is a compliance issue in Dubai, not just a housekeeping one. Municipality and environmental requirements around construction dust have tightened, neighbours complain faster than regulators inspect, and summer evaporation makes the traditional water truck an expensive way to fail. Here is how the alternatives compare.

Why water alone loses in the Gulf

Water controls dust only while the surface stays damp. At 45 degrees with wind, a sprayed haul road is dry again within the hour, so trucks loop continuously: fuel, driver hours, water cost and wheel rutting, repeated forever. The control is real but the duty cycle is brutal, and overnight the surface returns to powder.

How polymer suppressants work

A polymer dust suppressant is a dilute emulsion sprayed through the same water truck. As it dries it binds surface fines into a flexible crust a few millimetres thick. Traffic areas keep their bearing capacity; the crust flexes rather than shattering. Depending on traffic, one application holds days to weeks, and typical programmes cut watering frequency by 80 to 90 percent. The saving is not the water itself so much as the truck hours and diesel.

Where each method fits

Haul roads and access tracks: polymer treatment, refreshed on a schedule matched to traffic counts. Stockpiles and open cut faces: a heavier sealing application, since there is no traffic wear, can last months and doubles as wind erosion control. Active working faces: water remains right, because the surface changes hourly. Lay down yards: polymer, applied once per season.

Specifying a programme

Give the supplier the area, surface type, traffic level and target duration; the dilution ratio and application rate follow from that. Application is by ordinary water truck or towed sprayer, no special plant. Biodegradable formulations answer the environmental questions consultants raise. Our follow up article covers application rates and payback arithmetic in detail.
