Copper slag dominates budget blasting across the Gulf on headline price. Garnet dominates specification driven work. Both statements are true, and the reason is that they are measured differently: per tonne versus per square metre of finished surface.

Consumption is the hidden number

Copper slag is a single use expendable abrasive: it fractures on impact and leaves the nozzle as dust. Garnet is harder and tougher, so a significant portion of the grains survive impact intact. In enclosed or recoverable environments, garnet can be recycled several times, which changes the economics completely: purchase tonnage falls, and so does the volume of spent abrasive requiring disposal.

On open site work where recovery is impossible, garnet still typically consumes less per square metre because it cuts faster and breaks down less. The comparison to run is total cost per square metre prepared, including abrasive purchase, labour hours, and disposal, not price per tonne.

Dust, visibility and health

Copper slag generates heavy dust clouds. That slows work because the operator cannot see the surface, it raises containment costs in occupied areas, and it carries a respirable hazard profile that requires strict controls. Garnet produces markedly less dust, improving operator visibility and throughput and easing containment in live plants.

Profile and contamination

Angular garnet 30/60 produces a consistent 50 to 90 micron angular profile that suits heavy duty epoxy systems. Low conductivity washed garnet meeting SSPC AB-1 requirements matters for immersion and marine work, where abrasive borne salts would otherwise contaminate the surface and defeat the salt testing regime described in our Sa 2.5 guide. Slag abrasives vary far more in conductivity and embedment.

Sensible selection

Use garnet for immersion, marine and offshore work, blast rooms and recovery systems, live plants where dust must be controlled, and any specification citing SSPC AB-1 or salt limits.

Copper slag remains defensible for large open non critical structural work at atmospheric exposure with no recovery and no conductivity requirement.
