Sa 2.5 appears on almost every serious coating specification in the UAE, and it is misunderstood on almost as many sites. It is a visual cleanliness grade defined in ISO 8501-1, sitting between Sa 2 thorough blast cleaning and Sa 3 visually clean steel. Understanding what it requires protects you from the most common cause of premature coating failure: inadequate preparation.

The definition in practice

At Sa 2.5, viewed without magnification, the surface must be free from visible oil, grease, dirt, mill scale, rust, coatings and foreign matter, with only slight staining permitted: light shadows or streaks from rust or mill scale on no more than a small fraction of the surface. The standard is applied by comparing the blasted steel against the ISO 8501-1 photographic references for the relevant starting rust grade.

Starting condition changes the work

ISO 8501-1 defines four initial rust grades, A to D, from intact mill scale to heavily pitted steel. Reaching Sa 2.5 from grade D pitted steel takes far more abrasive and time than from grade B, which is why blasting contractors ask for photographs before pricing. Our guide to rust grades A through D covers this in detail.

Cleanliness is only one of three preparation checks

Profile. Heavy duty systems typically specify a 50 to 90 micron angular profile. Achieved profile depends on the abrasive: a graded garnet 30/60 gives a consistent sharp profile that suits high build epoxies.

Soluble salts. Invisible chlorides left on blasted steel cause osmotic blistering under the coating. Field testing to ISO 8502-9 with a Bresle patch is standard on marine and immersion work in the Gulf, with specifications commonly limiting chlorides to between 20 and 50 milligrams per square metre.

Dust. ISO 8502-3 tape testing confirms the compressed air blow down actually removed embedded dust.

Timing matters in Gulf humidity

Blasted steel flash rusts quickly beside the sea. Good practice in UAE summer is to coat within four hours of blasting, and always before any visible re-rusting. Where schedules cannot guarantee that window, dehumidified enclosures hold the blast overnight, a technique covered in our article on dehumidified blasting.
