Industrial quotations are dense with abbreviations that engineers use casually and procurement teams have to decode. This reference covers the terms that appear most often on UAE coating and chemical documentation.
Coating and preparation terms
DFT. Dry film thickness, in microns, the thickness of the coating after solvents evaporate. Measured per SSPC PA 2, explained in our measurement guide.
WFT. Wet film thickness, measured during application with a comb gauge to predict the resulting DFT.
Volume solids. The percentage of the wet product that remains as film. Drives coverage, as our cost comparison article explains.
Sa 2.5. Near white blast cleaning grade under ISO 8501-1.
St 2 and St 3. Hand and power tool cleaning grades, used where blasting is impossible.
Pot life. Usable time after mixing a two pack product, quoted at a stated temperature and much shorter in Gulf heat.
Induction time. A required wait after mixing, before application, for the reaction to begin.
Hp/A. Section factor, driving intumescent thickness, covered in our fire protection article.
Chemical and quality terms
COA. Certificate of analysis, reporting measured values for the specific lot delivered.
TDS and SDS. Technical data sheet and safety data sheet, distinguished in our documentation guide.
EBCT. Empty bed contact time, the sizing parameter for activated carbon filters.
DBP absorption. A carbon black structure measurement in the ASTM D1765 classification.
Iodine number. A surface area indicator for both carbon black and activated carbon.
Commercial and compliance terms
MOQ. Minimum order quantity.
Ex stock. Available now from local inventory, as opposed to indent, which means ordered from the manufacturer against your requirement.
DG. Dangerous goods, requiring classified packaging, marking and transport.
UN number. The four digit identifier for a dangerous substance, such as UN 2014 for hydrogen peroxide solutions in the 20 to 60 percent range.
