A fabrication shop under schedule pressure reaches for whatever dries fastest. That instinct is right for some work and expensive for others. The decision comes down to what the steel will face after it leaves the yard.
Quick drying alkyd enamel
QD enamel is a single pack alkyd that touches dry in well under an hour and handles within a shift. No mixing, no pot life, no induction time, minimal waste at the end of the day. For a busy shop this is genuine productivity: pieces can be moved, stacked and dispatched the same day.
The limits follow from the chemistry. Alkyds saponify in alkaline conditions, so they perform poorly on fresh concrete contact and galvanised surfaces without a suitable primer. Chemical resistance is modest. In UAE coastal exposure, an alkyd system on exterior steel needs maintenance far sooner than an epoxy system.
Two pack epoxy
An epoxy primer with an appropriate topcoat gives far better chemical resistance, adhesion and corrosion performance, and is the only sensible route where an ISO 12944 durability class has been specified. The cost is process discipline: correct mixing ratio, induction time, limited pot life, controlled recoat windows and greater sensitivity to surface preparation and application conditions.
A practical decision rule
Use QD enamel for interior racking, frames, machine guards, temporary works, shop fittings and items where appearance and modest protection are enough, and where fast turnaround has real commercial value.
Use an epoxy system for anything going outdoors long term, anything coastal, anything with chemical exposure, anything specified to a durability class, and anything expensive to access for repainting later.
Mixed approaches
Many shops run both: epoxy for project steel under specification, QD enamel for general fabrication. That is sensible, provided the two are not confused on the shop floor. Label racks clearly and keep the data sheets at the workstation. If a piece coated in enamel later needs an epoxy system, expect to strip rather than overcoat, because compatibility is poor in that direction. For the environmental limits governing both, see our guide on summer application in Dubai.
MENA Industrial Supplies stocks both quick drying enamels and full epoxy systems in Dubai, with data sheets supplied so your shop can match product to job.
