Dubai summer is simultaneously too hot and too wet for careless coating work. Steel in the sun exceeds 65 degrees Celsius while coastal night humidity pushes past 85 percent. Every good specification carries three environmental rules, and understanding them lets you plan productive work instead of failed inspections.
Rule one: surface at least 3 degrees above dew point
ISO 8502-4 guidance, quoted in nearly every marine and protective TDS, requires the steel temperature to sit at least 3 degrees Celsius above the dew point during application and initial cure. Below that margin an invisible film of condensation forms on the surface and the coating is applied over water. In practice the risky window in the Gulf is dawn: steel cooled overnight meets rising humid morning air, exactly when crews want to start.
Rule two: relative humidity ceilings
Many specifications stop application above 85 percent relative humidity because at that level small substrate temperature swings cross the dew point. Moisture cured products are exceptions with their own windows; check the specific TDS rather than assuming.
Rule three: maximum surface temperature
Most epoxies and polyurethanes carry an upper substrate limit around 50 to 60 degrees. Above it, solvents flash off before the film flows out, producing dry spray, pinholes and weak intercoat adhesion. Steel in direct July sun exceeds this by mid morning, which is why summer coating in Dubai migrates to nights, early mornings after the dew point clears, and shaded or sheltered work.
A workable summer routine
Measure, do not guess: a surface thermometer plus a whirling or digital hygrometer at the work face, logged every couple of hours. Blast and coat in the same shift so prepared steel never sits overnight, a practice explained in our Sa 2.5 guide. Watch pot life: at 40 degrees ambient, a two pack epoxy with a 45 minute pot life at 24 degrees may give you 15 minutes. Mix smaller kits more often.
