Every two pack coating data sheet lists a minimum and a maximum recoat interval at several temperatures. Crews watch the minimum because it gates progress. The maximum is the one that quietly destroys coating systems, and Gulf heat shortens both.
Overcoating too early
Below the minimum interval the previous coat still holds solvent. Sealing it under a fresh film traps that solvent, which then works its way out as blistering, pinholing or a soft, under cured film. On thick epoxy builds the effect can appear days later, after the crew has moved on. Cold or humid conditions extend the minimum interval beyond the data sheet figure.
Overcoating too late
This is the expensive one. Cured epoxy surfaces become chemically inert and glossy. Beyond the maximum interval a new coat bonds mechanically at best, and intercoat delamination follows, sometimes years later when the system is under stress. Ultraviolet exposure accelerates the problem: an epoxy intermediate left uncoated in Dubai sun for several weeks may pass its overcoating window far sooner than the data sheet suggests, because surface chalking has begun.
The remedy when the window is missed is not to press on regardless. It is to abrade: sweep blast, or thorough mechanical abrasion and solvent cleaning, to restore a key. That costs time and money, which is why programme planning around recoat windows pays.
How temperature moves the numbers
Data sheets quote intervals at reference temperatures, often 10, 25 and 40 degrees Celsius. At 40 degrees the minimum interval may be a fraction of the 25 degree figure, because cure accelerates. The maximum shortens too. In a Dubai summer both ends compress, meaning the practical overcoating window can be measured in hours rather than days, and a weekend break can cost you the window.
Practical control
Record the completion time of each coat by area. Post the applicable intervals at the workface for the actual site temperature, not the laboratory reference. Where the programme cannot meet the maximum, choose products with wider overcoating windows at specification stage rather than improvising later.
