Decorative plaster turns flat walls into architectural features, and it is unforgiving of shortcuts. The finish shows every defect beneath it, so the preparation matters more than with any conventional paint system.
Substrate first
Polished plaster finishes are thin. Anything below telegraphs through: trowel marks in the render, joint lines in board work, moisture staining, or a chalky old paint film. The substrate needs to be flat, sound, dry and uniformly absorbent. On new block and render, allow the substrate to dry and carbonate properly before starting; rushing this in an air conditioned building traps moisture that later blisters the finish.
The system build up
A typical stucco system runs: primer or bonding coat tinted towards the finish colour, base coats applied and levelled, finish coats applied in thin passes with the trowel, then burnishing to develop sheen, and finally a wax or sealer where the specification calls for water resistance or a deeper polish. Each layer has its own drying window; forcing the sequence produces a dull, patchy result no amount of extra burnishing recovers.
Realistic expectations
Handmade finishes vary. That variation is the aesthetic, not a defect, but clients need to understand it before the first wall is sampled. Always produce a sample board on the actual substrate, in the actual lighting, and get written approval. Lighting changes these finishes dramatically: raking light from a wall washer reveals texture that flat lighting hides completely, so approve samples under the specified lighting scheme.
Where it works and where it does not
Hotel lobbies, restaurant features, villa entrance halls, retail and showroom walls. Exterior grades exist for façades with weather resistant formulations. Avoid unmodified polished plaster in permanently wet areas such as shower interiors unless the system is specifically rated and sealed for it; for humid rooms generally, pair the finish with the mould control measures in our humidity guide.
Applicator skill is the variable
The same material in different hands produces different walls. Ask to see completed work, not photographs of someone else work, and price on the basis of a trialled applicator team.
