On structural and pressure equipment work, the weld is only as auditable as the consumable that made it. When a third party inspector or client quality engineer asks which batch of electrodes went into a particular joint, the answer needs to exist. Building that trail costs very little if it starts at goods inward.
What auditors actually request
Manufacturer certificates. A test certificate for the consumable batch, showing classification, chemical composition and mechanical properties against the relevant AWS or EN specification.
Goods inward records. Batch or lot numbers received, quantities, and confirmation that packaging arrived intact and dry.
Storage and issue logs. For low hydrogen electrodes, evidence that holding ovens ran at the correct temperature, that issue and return times were recorded against the atmospheric exposure limit, and that any rebaking was logged. Linkage to the joint. Weld records that connect a joint number to the welder, the procedure and the consumable batch issued that shift.
Keeping it practical
A simple issue register at the oven achieves most of this: date, time out, welder name, quantity, batch number, time returned. Photograph or scan certificates on arrival and file them by batch number, so retrieval later takes seconds rather than a search through a storeroom. Rotate stock strictly first in, first out by batch, which keeps the register honest and prevents old stock accumulating at the back of a rack.
Why it matters commercially
Traceability failures rarely cause weld defects on their own, but they cause rejections, hold points and retests, which cost programme time. On projects with third party inspection, an organised consumable file often shortens the inspection itself, because the inspector stops looking for systemic problems once the basics are visibly under control.

Order consumables in batch quantities matched to your consumption so fewer batches are open simultaneously. Ask your supplier for certificates at the time of delivery rather than retrospectively. Keep genuine parts and consumables in the chain, since substituted or unmarked material breaks the trail entirely.
