Coastal UAE humidity is quietly hostile to welding consumables. Low hydrogen electrodes such as E7018 have hygroscopic coatings that absorb moisture from the air, and that moisture returns as diffusible hydrogen in the weld: the root cause of delayed cracking in restrained joints. The protection routine is cheap and completely standard; skipping it is how expensive repairs begin.
The storage chain
Sealed containers first. Electrodes stay in their sealed tins or vacuum packs until needed. An opened, resealed can in a humid store is not protected.
Holding ovens second. Once opened, low hydrogen electrodes go into a holding oven at 120 to 150 degrees Celsius, per AWS D1.1 practice and manufacturer sheets. Site ovens at the workface are the difference between compliance on paper and in practice.
The four hour rule. Out of the oven, a standard E7018 may be exposed to the atmosphere for a maximum of about four hours before it must be rebaked. In heavy coastal humidity, treat that as an upper bound, not an entitlement. Moisture resistant R designated electrodes extend the window; check the classification on the tin.
Rebaking, once
Exposed electrodes are reconditioned at roughly 260 to 425 degrees for an hour, per the manufacturer sheet. AWS practice allows one rebake cycle; after that the coating chemistry has degraded and the rods are scrapped. A marker system on ovens and quivers, issue time written on tape, keeps the four hour clock honest.
Storeroom design in the Gulf
Keep the consumables store below 50 percent relative humidity: air conditioning plus stock on pallets away from walls achieves it. Wire spools for MIG and flux for submerged arc have their own humidity sensitivities and stay wrapped until mounted. First in, first out rotation by lot number preserves traceability, which matters when a procedure qualification asks which heat of consumables was used, a topic expanded in our article on consumable traceability.
MENA Industrial Supplies stocks welding consumables and genuine ITW instruments and spares in Dubai, stored under controlled conditions, with manufacturer certificates on request.
