Freshly blasted steel beside the Gulf begins flash rusting within hours. On tank internals, ship hulls and large fabrications, that clock can be shorter than the time needed to coat the area. Dehumidification is the industrial answer, and on the right project it pays for itself several times over.

The mechanism

Desiccant dehumidifiers push dry air into an enclosed space, lowering the dew point well below the steel temperature. With the dew point suppressed, the 3 degree margin required by ISO 8502-4 is comfortably maintained regardless of outside conditions, and flash rusting effectively stops. Blasted steel can then be held overnight or across a weekend in a stable condition rather than deteriorating.

Where the economics work

Tank and vessel internals. The classic application. The space is already enclosed, so the dehumidification cost is modest and the benefit large: blast the whole tank, then coat it, instead of chasing small areas.

Marine and offshore work. Ballast tanks and confined compartments where humidity is unavoidable and rework is punishing.

Large fabrications under temporary enclosure. Where scaffolding and sheeting exist anyway for containment, adding dry air is incremental.

Summer night shift work. Where dawn humidity would otherwise stop the crew exactly when the temperature is workable.

Where it does not

Open site structural steel with no enclosure. Small areas where blast and coat can be completed inside the same shift, using the discipline described in our Sa 2.5 guide. Short duration jobs where mobilising equipment costs more than the rework it prevents.

Practical control

Monitor and log dew point, air temperature and steel temperature continuously inside the enclosure, not once a shift. Keep the enclosure sealed, since every open panel undoes the conditioning. Size the equipment for the volume and the air changes required rather than optimistically. And confirm the coating system suits the conditioned environment: some moisture cured products actually need ambient humidity to cure, so the conditioning must be planned around the specification, as covered in our summer application guide.
