Decorative paint selection in the UAE is often settled by habit or by whichever brand the consultant named first. The criteria that actually predict performance and cost on site are more specific, and they apply regardless of the name on the tin.
Criteria that matter
Opacity and spreading rate. The combination that determines cost per square metre, as explained in our volume painting guide. Always verified on the actual substrate, not from the brochure alone.
Scrub and stain resistance. Critical in corridors, schools, hospitals and hospitality. Ask for the test standard and cycle count rather than accepting a marketing description such as washable.
Colour system depth. Whether the tinting system can match the specified palette accurately, and whether deep colours are achievable without opacity collapse, which is a common failing in strong shades.
Exterior durability. For façades, UV and alkali resistance in Gulf conditions. Rutile pigment quality matters here, a topic covered in our titanium dioxide article.
Local availability. The best specification is worthless if the range is on indent with a six week lead time when a site needs 400 litres on Thursday.
Where the ranges differ in practice
Premium interior ranges typically justify their price through opacity, better touch up behaviour and higher scrub resistance, which pay back on high traffic areas and on jobs where snagging quality is scrutinised. Economy ranges are defensible for back of house areas, staff accommodation and warehouses where appearance tolerance is wider and repaint cycles are accepted.
Dulux and Levis both offer interior and exterior ranges across those tiers, and the sensible approach is to select tier by area rather than brand by building.
Practical selection process
Shortlist on the technical criteria above, obtain data sheets, apply sample areas on the real substrate under the real lighting, then price on cost per square metre including the number of coats. Get client sign off on the sample area, not on a colour card. That sequence removes almost all handover disputes about appearance.
