Every plant answers this question implicitly, usually by accident: some items accumulate on shelves for years while others halt production because nobody ordered them. Making the decision deliberately is straightforward.
The variables
Consumption predictability. Steady, forecastable usage suits scheduled call off. Sporadic, unpredictable usage suits either supplier held stock or a small buffer.
Lead time and its variability. An item available ex stock in Dubai within a day carries different risk from one on eight week indent from Europe. Variability matters more than the average: a reliable four week lead time is easier to plan than one that ranges from two to ten.
Shelf life. This is the constraint most often overlooked. Two pack coatings, catalysts and some chemicals degrade. Buying twelve months of a product with a nine month shelf life converts a discount into waste.
Cost of stockout. A halted production line or an idle applicator crew costs far more per day than the working capital tied up in buffer stock. That asymmetry justifies holding critical items even at low usage.
A practical segmentation
Hold buffer stock for items with short shelf life risk but high stockout cost, unpredictable usage, or long and variable lead times. Size the buffer to lead time plus a margin, not to a round number of drums.
Order against demand for items with reliable local availability, predictable consumption, and limited shelf life. This is where a Dubai stockist genuinely replaces your warehouse, as discussed in our supplier selection guide.
Contract with scheduled call off for high volume steady items. Price is fixed against a forecast, the supplier holds the stock, and deliveries arrive on a schedule. This is usually the cheapest total cost for materials like carbon black or bulk chemicals in continuous production.
Storage conditions are part of the calculation
Holding stock in an uncontrolled warehouse in Gulf summer shortens shelf life beyond the label figure. Heat accelerates degradation of peroxides, some resins and pigment dispersions, as covered in our storage article. If you cannot store it properly, supplier held stock is the better answer.
MENA Industrial Supplies holds stock at Dubai Investment Park and arranges scheduled call off supply for repeating industrial requirements.
