On a jetty pile or offshore structure, corrosion is not uniform with depth. The splash zone, alternately wetted and exposed, corrodes fastest, and it is the zone where cathodic protection cannot help.

Why the splash zone is worst

Permanently immersed steel has limited oxygen availability and benefits from cathodic protection. Atmospheric steel above the splash is wet only intermittently. The splash zone gets the worst of both: continuous wetting with oxygenated, chloride rich seawater, high oxygen availability from air contact, wave impact and abrasion, and elevated Gulf temperatures accelerating every reaction.

Critically, cathodic protection requires a continuous electrolyte path. In the splash zone the surface is intermittently dry, so protection is unreliable exactly where corrosion is fastest. Coating carries the whole burden.

What protects it

High build epoxy systems. Substantially thicker than atmospheric systems, applied over Sa 2.5 blast cleaned steel with strict soluble salt control, since chlorides trapped beneath the film are ruinous here. ISO 12944 treats this as the CX or Im category rather than ordinary atmospheric exposure, as discussed in our corrosivity guide.

Glass flake reinforced coatings. Glass flakes align parallel to the surface, lengthening the path moisture must travel to reach steel and improving abrasion resistance against wave borne debris.

Physical protection systems. Monel sheathing, petrolatum tape wraps and splash zone jackets are used where coating alone has proved insufficient or where access for recoating is impractical.

Application reality

Tidal windows constrain working time, and the surface must be dry at application. Dehumidification and enclosure, covered in our dehumidified blasting article, are frequently necessary. Surface salt testing to ISO 8502-9 is not optional here; it is the difference between a ten year system and a two year one.

Inspection and maintenance

Splash zone coatings should be inspected on a defined cycle, since deterioration accelerates once the film is breached. Access cost dominates repair economics, which usually justifies a heavier initial specification, exactly the calculation described in our maintenance strategy article.
