The anticorrosive primer is the layer that actually protects a steel or aluminium hull; the antifouling and topcoat only work as well as the barrier under them. Marine epoxy primers are designed for high film build, surface tolerance where full blasting is not practical, and fast overcoating so docking schedules stay short. Blast cleaned steel to ISO 8501-1 Sa 2.5 gives the best result; mechanically prepared St 2 to St 3 surfaces are acceptable for maintenance schemes with a surface tolerant grade.
