Ordinary coatings fail fast above roughly 150 C, and refinery and industrial plants are full of surfaces hotter than that: exhaust stacks, flare lines, heater casings, steam lines and process pipework. High temperature silicone coatings hold on where conventional paint burns off, protecting steel from corrosion at continuous service temperatures up to around 540 to 600 C depending on grade.
